August Sander

August Sander was a German portrait and documentary photographer. Born 17th November 1876 Sander's first book Face of our Time was published in 1929. Sander has been described as "the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century." April 20th 1964 he passed away in Cologne.
At college we were given an assignment to produce three pictures in the style of Sander. At first this seemed easy, but as I went along I found it quite tricky.

Feature’s he continually worked with is the blank expression and shallow depth of field. However when photographing it was a big step from any other project we had been given because I had to stick to certain elements, such as the depth of field, the blank expression, not to mention colour, composition and visual. Below show Sanders work and my attempt to portray his style.
